How to read a birth chart

A birth chart is a map of positions at one moment, read through an interpretive tradition. Here is how to tell the calculation from the story.

First, what is being mapped?

A natal chart places the Sun, Moon and planets relative to the zodiac for a particular birth date and time. A local horizon and meridian also inform the ascendant and house layout. The circular diagram is a convention for reading these relationships, not a photograph of the sky. Encyclopaedia Britannica · Horoscope

In a tropical chart, twelve named signs divide the ecliptic into equal sectors. These signs are not interchangeable with the boundaries of their similarly named constellations. The position can be calculated; assigning personality traits or future events to it is a separate astrological interpretation. Encyclopaedia Britannica · Zodiac

Read it in three layers

  1. 01 / Body: what is placed?

The Sun, Moon and planets each have a calculated position. In traditional readings, they become symbols for different themes, not measurable personality variables.

  2. 02 / Sign: where on the zodiac?

The sign names a sector of the chosen zodiac. Your familiar “star sign” usually means your Sun sign; a full chart includes other placements.

  3. 03 / House: which chart division?

Houses partition the chart using a chosen system. Astrologers associate houses with areas of life; changing the birth time or house system can change the house assignment. Astrodienst · Swiss Ephemeris manual, house systems

Aspects add a fourth lens: angular relationships between placements. Their traditional meanings are interpretations, not a diagnosis.

Illustrative example

Why one input changes the reading

Imagine entering the correct birth date and city but leaving the time unknown, then later finding a recorded birth time. The date still anchors the chart, but the newly supplied time allows a more specific horizon and house calculation. Do not infer an ascendant or house placement from the date alone. Astrodienst · Why birth time matters

A compact practice step

On a calculated chart, locate the Sun entry, note its sign, then check whether a house is shown. Repeat for the Moon. Read any interpretation separately from those recorded placements.

Where the map ends

Jehana calculates planetary positions with a Moshier-based JavaScript ephemeris and Placidus houses separately when time and location permit. This is not a claim of Swiss Ephemeris parity or a product-level precision guarantee. The birth-chart calculation rounds displayed planetary longitudes to two decimal places; rounding is not a precision guarantee. Birth records can be uncertain, and some house geometries cannot be resolved. Astrodienst · Swiss Ephemeris manual, house systems

A chart does not establish your character, health, relationships or future by scientific evidence. Treat a reading as a prompt to notice what resonates and discard what does not. Learn why birth time matters and how daily horoscopes differ from personalized transits.

A practical next step

Put the ideas beside a chart.

A calculated placement is a starting point for reflection, not a verdict about your life. Start with your Sun, Moon and rising sign; check the input time before interpreting houses.
